The read
Olive body with a dark belly stripe, 23–30 sharp scutes. Commingles with white sturgeon.
Field notes
Commingles with white sturgeon in the lower Columbia estuary and Yaquina Bay in summer. Listed here so you can identify and release it, not to pursue.
vs. legal WHITE sturgeon: green = olive body with a dark green stripe down the belly, a longer pointed snout, and fewer, sharper lateral scutes (23–30). White sturgeon are grayer with 38–48 scutes. When unsure, release.
No legal recreational harvest in Oregon: green sturgeon may not be retained or targeted. Catch-and-release only; ideally release without removing it from the water.
Protected (Southern DPS, threatened). If hooked while white-sturgeon fishing, release it immediately and unharmed. Know the difference before keeping any sturgeon.
